Greetings from Lynda Weeks, Executive Director
On behalf of Komen Kentucky, thank you for your past support. With your ongoing help, we will continue to work with our community partners to seek out the 1,339,000 moms, daughters, sisters, and friends in our 111-county service area to educate them about breast health and navigate any fears that are preventing them from seeking screening. When necessary, we will then help them access the most cutting edge diagnostics and treatments, regardless of their ability to pay. Thank you for sharing our vision of “a world without breast cancer” and making this possible.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
Mike Davis joins the Komen Kentucky Board of
Directors
Mike Davis has many titles. He grew up knowing some would be part of his
life, like husband, father, and grandfather. Others, like UK Wildcat fan,
golfer, and Senior Director of the Nutritional Lipids Supply Chain at DSM
Nutritional Products, evolved naturally, as well. One title that took him completely by
surprise, though, is breast cancer survivor. One in 1000 men are diagnosed with
breast cancer. Mike learned that when he
was 53 and facing a mastectomy, 12 weeks of chemotherapy and 22 rounds of
radiation after the lump on his chest that had itched for quite a while, and
seemed to be growing, was diagnosed as stage 3 breast cancer.
“Breast cancer threatened my life and my family’s
well-being," says Davis, "but it has turned out to be a great
blessing. Family is more important, colors are brighter, friends more
cherished, and the everyday problems are so much smaller.”
Davis has been in every Lexington Race for the
Cure since 2012 and wears the Survivor Pink proudly. He spoke at two of
those events and chaired the 2016 committee for the annual “Kentucky Golf
Classic to Benefit Susan G. Komen” which raised $15,000. He hopes to increase
that amount this year at the October 17 event at Champions Golf Course. (If you
are interested in playing, or would like to join the planning committee, please
contact the Lexington office for more details).
Komen Kentucky is honored that Davis agreed to
join its board of directors in February.
“I originally started this quest to make sure no other male would suffer
from what I did due to the lack of knowledge," states Davis, "now I fight the fight for both
men and women.”
