Happy Holidays from the board of directors and staff of Komen Kentucky. 

We hope to see you at one of our upcoming annual Holiday Open Houses - in Louisville (1201 Story Ave., Ste. 205) on Thursday, December 6, 4-7pm and in Lexington (207 N. Upper St., Ste. D), on Tuesday, December 11, 4-7pm.  The aspiration of these events is to show appreciation to our volunteers, supporters, survivors, and donors who make it all possible.

As we focus on our BOLD GOAL to reduce breast cancer deaths in the U.S. by 50% by 2026, we must continue funding breast cancer research and the services needed to eliminate disparities.  Research alone cannot save lives if people don't have access to treatment, and we are working hard to ensure that where someone lives will not determine if they live.

We truly appreciate the support you have shown throughout the year and hope you have a joyous holiday season!

Malinda Carl-Rummage

As a fit, young owner of a Jazzercise center in Bardstown, KY, Malinda Carl-Rummage was surprised and devasted when she learned she had breast cancer at the age of 35. To learn how she found out about her diagnosis, click here to read more.

Susan G. Komen Kentucky is here in OUR COMMUNITY to help women like Malinda with information, resources, and treatment support. Komen is also busy GLOBALLY with critical breast cancer research.

HELP US ADDRESS BREAST CANCER DISPARITIES

Komen Kentucky announces the availability of grant funds for 2019-20. Grants will be made to support efforts to reduce breast cancer disparities in all Kentucky counties (excluding Boone, Campbell, Crittenden, Daviess, Gallatin, Grant, Hancock, Henderson, Hopkins, Kenton, Mclean, Union, and Henderson, which are covered by other Komen Affiliates) and the Indiana counties of Clark, Floyd, Harrison, and Scott. 

Based on our community needs assessment, Komen has identified the following funding priority areas:

• Increase evidence-based patient navigation for Black/African-American women that reside in Jefferson County, KY; all women residing in the rural KY Counties of Clay, Clinton, Jackson, McCreary, Oldham, Owsley, Shelby, Spencer, and Wayne; and all women residing in Floyd County, IN.

• Reduce barriers to quality breast cancer care experienced by uninsured and underinsured individuals residing in Clay, Clinton, Jackson, McCreary, Owsley and Wayne Counties in KY. 

• Increase the availability of no cost or low-cost screening/diagnostic/ treatment services, mobile mammography, transportation and interpreter services.

• Provide evidence-based and culturally relevant breast cancer education in one-on-one and group settings for Black/African-American and/or Hispanic/Latina individuals that reside in Anderson, Bourbon, Clark, Fayette, Scott, and/or Woodford Counties in KY, as well as all individuals residing in the rural KY Counties of Clay, Clinton, Jackson, McCreary, Owsley, and Wayne.

Any government (170c1) and/or nonprofit (501c3) organization in good standing with the Affiliate may apply. The projects must be specific to breast health and/or breast cancer. Grant funds must be used to serve residents from all or part of the Affiliate service area. Organizations are not eligible if any key employees, directors, officers, or agents have been convicted of fraud or any crime involving financial or administrative impropriety in the 12 months prior to the application deadline (January 11, 2019, 5:00pm, Eastern Time).

PARTNERS IN PINK

Ladder Now

Thank you to Ladder Now for their "Team Green Goes Pink" campaign in October which raised $5,400 for Komen Kentucky. They had an employee-sparked initiative to raise money for breast cancer programs and research. Each Friday of the month, they donated $1 from each claim to Susan G. Komen. They also wore pink branded shirts to spread awareness.

WKYT

WKYT-TV, a CBS news affiliate in Lexington, KY has been a tremendous media partner of Susan G. Komen Kentucky - helping to spread awareness of breast cancer, our organization, and our events. This year, they created and sold these pink t-shirts  - modeled by WKYT anchors Sam Dick and Amber Philpott - to raise money for SGKK. 

Sam and Amber also served as the emcees for the Lexington Race for the Cure.

Hopkinsville Boys & Girls Club - Torch Club

The children in the Boys and Girls Club of Hopkinsville-Christian County Torch Club (which is a community service leadership group) were busy in October making 240 cupcakes to help support Susan G. Komen's 10,000 Cupcakes One Great Cause initiative sponsored by KitchenAid. KitchenAid committed to donating $1 (up to $10,000) for every cupcake photo and video publicly shared on Instagram and Twitter, using both hashtags: #10000cupcakes and #donate. 

The students baked, decorated, and sold the treats to show their support. They raised $122 for Komen Kentucky. Yum!
