Get Active This Summer - A Message from Lynda Weeks, Executive Director

Lynda Weeks

As I meet people throughout the community, I often hear, “Why is Komen still spending money on awareness and education? Doesn’t everyone know about breast cancer?”

Well, the truth is, not everyone “knows” about breast cancer, and people often have mistaken beliefs about the disease. For instance, most people assume they are “safe” from a diagnosis of breast cancer if it is not in their family. The truth is only 5-10% of the people who are newly diagnosed with breast cancer have a family history of the disease. In other words, 90-95% do not have it in their family history. Anywhere.

Surprising? This is an example of why we continue to work through local community centers, churches, clinics, and schools to educate people on the signs and symptoms of breast cancer. We distribute the “Know Your Normal” cards and stress the importance of self-awareness to people. Did you know the signs of breast cancer are not the same for all women, and that finding a lump is only one possible symptom of breast cancer?

Know your risk. Get screened. Know what is normal for you. And make healthy lifestyle choices. Summer is a great time to begin adding regular exercise to your routine; regular physical activity has been proven to decrease your risk of breast cancer.

Thank you for the opportunity to share “What Pink Makes Possible” with you each month!

Most sincerely,

Lynda Weeks' signature

Kathy Branham, fundaiser extraordinaire

Kathy Branham is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to raising money for Komen Kentucky. She got involved in the Lexington Race for the Cure in 2010 and, since then, has been the top fundraiser in the Race every year, but two. She has personally raised more than $35,000 through her efforts - which have included asking for donations, selling candy bars, raffling off baskets of items, holding a "Dance for the Cure" (since she likes to clog), and even shaving her head! Kathy is passionate about finding a cure for breast cancer because her sister and two cousins are survivors of the disease.

kathy branhamWhen she is not busy working for Lockheed Martin, Kathy enjoys watching her son race his car on a dirt track. She notes that her family, friends and co-workers have been big supporters of her fundraising efforts and help her team, "Pink Troopers," in a variety of ways; without them, she could not do all of the things that she does.

For example, Pink Troopers will be hosting an auction to raise money for this year's Race on June 9, 6:30-10pm at Powell County High School (700 W College Ave, Stanton, KY). They are also getting ready to order shirts that they sell as part of their fundraising. For more information, visit their Facebook page

Komen Kentucky appreciates Kathy and all that she does to help us find an end to breast cancer.

*If you would like to get more involved as a volunteer for Komen Kentucky, please contact us to get added to the Volunteer List. Volunteer opportunities will be sent once a month to all interested people via a separate email.

Thorntons has been a tremendous supporter of Komen Kentucky and breast cancer awareness for years since the disease "impacts the lives of many of our guests, team members, families and friends." Their sponsorship of the Louisville Race for the Cure grew to the Champion level in 2013, where it still remains. Their smiling employees are often the first people participants see when they come to the Race since Thorntons hosts the pre-Race food and beverage stations and provides entertainment for the event.  They also generously sponsor the Louisville Pink Tie Gala.
