How Komen is Working to Reduce Breast Cancer Deaths

Lynda Weeks

In 2016, Susan G. Komen set a Bold Goal – “to reduce the number of breast cancer deaths in the U.S. by 50% by 2026.” – This commitment is more than just words. We have a two-fold approach to reaching it:

First, we will continue to fund breast cancer research. Komen is the largest non-governmental funder of breast cancer research in the world. We have invested more than $920 million toward finding the cures. Now that we have a better understanding of this disease, our focus is on: improving therapies for aggressive forms of breast cancer, effective treatments for metastatic breast cancer, and transformative technologies that allow the very earliest detections of the disease (when treatment is most effective).

Secondly, we are increasing our focus and funding to eliminate health care disparities - the avoidable differences that include education, income, and environment. Did you know that approximately 29% of all cancer mortalities are due to disparities? In other words, people are dying because they don’t have the resources they need to be screened or treated.

Every year, Komen Kentucky invests thousands of dollars to educate people to “know their normal” and the eight symptoms of breast cancer. We also invest in: patient navigation, breast cancer screenings, treatments, and transportation (either for gas cards or taxi service) to treatments.

Our focus for this year is a continuation of what we began last year – showing “What Pink Makes Possible.” We want to show WHY we do what we do at Komen Kentucky and HOW we help people in our community. By partnering with medical organizations, we increase our impact and by collaborating with other nonprofits, we achieve more for less, reach more people, and make a greater difference.

Thank you for helping us show the impact and meaning of PINK and what it makes possible! I invite you to join us at either of our Pink UnTied events this month to celebrate our success (see below for details).

Marletta McDermott

Marletta McDermott

Marletta McDermott was diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ in April 2012 when she was 39. She was the seventh person in her family to have the disease. Her mom, two aunts, two sisters, and a cousin had also been affected.

Luckily, she caught it early and did not have to have chemotherapy nor radiation, although she did have a bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction.

When she saw a notice on Facebook about the Colors of Promise breast cancer outreach group in April 2013, she was eager to get involved to help spread the word about the importance of getting screened. "I encourage people to keep an eye on their health. Don't let the little things turn into something bigger." She knows firsthand that catching it early can make all the difference. She feels blessed to be living life to the fullest.

Women like Marletta are the inspiration for the work we do at Komen Kentucky and why we work hard to fund research and share information about breast cancer and treatment options, among other things. If you are willing to share your Survivor story to provide hope and encouragement to others battling the disease, please contact us
