May 2018
Greetings from Lynda Weeks, Executive Director
As we celebrate mothers and mother-figures this weekend, the
lyrics from a popular country song come to mind…”most mamas oughta qualify for
sainthood.” Amen! Mothers are the tireless caregivers and nurturers, and
one of life’s true blessings! Happy Mother’s Day!
On June 1, we will launch a new community awareness and
fundraising initiative, Confections for
the Cure. Komen Kentucky has
partnered with 13 restaurants across Louisville and Lexington for this
initiative. Be sure to read more about this program below. We hope you’ll be a part of
this campaign as we seek to increase breast cancer awareness, raise funds, and
engage the local communities in our cause.
Registration for the Louisville and Lexington Races will
open early June. In recognition of National
Cancer Survivors Day, June 3, ALL
SURVIVORS will have the opportunity to register for $20 during the month of June. Also, I encourage everyone to take
advantage of the Early Bird Discount of $10, if you register before July 1.
Komen Kentucky is working hard to find more cures and
treatments for breast cancer, as we focus on our BOLD GOAL “to reduce breast
cancer deaths in the U.S. by 50% by 2026” so families will no longer have to
face losing their loved ones to this disease. While great discoveries have been
made in the past 36 years, there is still more to be done and we need your
support! We encourage you to get involved with SGKK.
Warm regards,
Lynda Weeks

Survivor Spotlight
Kelly Gorbett
Kelly Gorbett of Richmond, KY, works as a school psychologist for
Fayette County Schools. She is trained to help people deal with stress, trauma and other issues, so when at age 38, she was diagnosed with stage 1 triple negative breast
cancer, she took a deep breath and handled it.
She had discovered the lump herself in August 2016, and doctors confirmed it was cancer. For the rest of the story, click here.
If you would like to share your survivor story with us, please email Lynn for more information.

Confections for the Cure
Komen Kentucky is launching a new program to raise awareness and funds for the Affiliate. Restaurants in Louisville and Lexington have agreed to create and serve a special pink dessert throughout the month of June, in recognition of National Cancer Survivors' Day, June 3.
Each pink-inspired dessert will be served with a custom pink cocktail napkin, printed with information about Komen Kentucky’s impact. Patrons may receive a napkin with a survivor story, facts about how donations to Komen Kentucky are used to fight breast cancer, or Susan G. Komen’s Bold Goal: to reduce the current number of breast cancer deaths by 50 percent by the year 2026. The restaurants will also provide an informational menu insert explaining the Confections for the Cure initiative to restaurant guests.
We encourage you to show your support by visiting the following participating restaurants and asking them about their desserts.

Komen Kentucky Partnerships
Komen Kentucky is fortunate to have many partnerships throughout the state. Here are some of them:
Kroger supports Komen Kentucky through its Community Rewards program. If you have a Kroger Plus Card, you may enroll at anytime for a portion of your purchases to be donated back to the charity you choose. For the eastern part of the state, use Susan G. Komen Lexington #64714 and for the western part of the state and Southern Indiana, use Susan G. Komen Louisville #11657.
Nanz & Kraft Florist will donate $2 per order to Komen Kentucky through their Helping Hands program if you mention Susan G. Komen when you order flowers from them. With Mother's Day this weekend, please keep that in mind!
