March 2018
Making an Impact on our Bold Goal Against Breast Cancer
This past weekend, a panel of medical professionals and community leaders met to review Komen Kentucky's 2018-19 grant proposals. While it is too early in the process to announce the projects and programs we will be funding this year (thanks to your generosity, it is a great time to share how your previous investments in our organization have been used.
For 2017-18, the money invested in local programs assisted the following number of people with these services:
Breast cancer
screenings: 3,471 Diagnostic
services: 563 Patient
navigation: 1,402 Treatment
support: 1,221 Transportation
assistance: 528 Survivor
groups: 225
Total number impacted: 7,410
The money also helped provide educational materials and information to an additional 72,909 people. Thank you for supporting our efforts to show What PINK Makes Possible in this community.
Speaking of What PINK Makes Possible, we want to thank the sponsors, especially Delta Dental of Kentucky (our title sponsor), and the attendees of our recent Pink UnTied events in Louisville and Lexington. Events like these, and our Races for the Cure, are the major revenue sources that allow us to fund the above services.
In closing, I would also like to thank our amazing board members for their contributions of time, talent, and treasure, and introduce our new board
members: Sherry Emly, Shannon Paddymo, and Stefni Powell. We are excited to have them involved and hope you'll join us in welcoming them aboard, as I know they will make a bold impact on our BOLD GOAL, as well. Plus, special recognition to the staff who makes all these ideas and dreams a reality.
Best regards,
Bob Iezzi Board President

SURVIVOR SPOTLIGHT
Norma Jean Burden
Norma Jean Burden of Louisville says that she had never been sick in
her life before being diagnosed with stage 1, HER2+ breast cancer in January
2009. She was in shock when the nurse called her with the results of her
routine mammogram. The first thing out of her mouth was “What do I do?”
The nurse helped her find a surgeon and she had a
lumpectomy a few weeks later, followed by 33 rounds of radiation. She started
chemotherapy in July. “My hair fell out at about round three. I could feel it
happening. I went to a beauty school across the street and a very nice
instructor took me to the back of the salon, covered the mirror with a black
drape, and just shaved away.”
She stresses that the best thing people can do when they
have a friend or family member going through breast cancer is to “listen, just
listen, not say anything, just listen.” She said that she was lucky to have
that support like that.
Women like Norma Jean are the inspiration for the work we do at Komen Kentucky and why we work hard to fund research and share information about breast cancer and treatment options, among other things. If you are willing to share your Survivor story to provide hope and encouragement to others battling the disease, please contact us.
