ENGAGE AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Bob Iezzi

Everyone knows October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month; however, the months leading up to it are also EXTREMELY important to the Louisville and Lexington Races for the Cure, our two main fundraising events. The reality of breast cancer is that EVERY month is critically important to our effort, because every day, week, and month, we battle this horrible disease and someone else hears the dreaded words, “you have breast cancer.”

We continue to find fun ways to ENGAGE the community to join our efforts to raise awareness and funds to support research, as well as local services and programs. As you will see, there is much information in this newsletter, as well as numerous opportunities in which you can ENGAGE. Please take the time to pick one, two, or as many as you wish to get involved, but please DO join us by ENGAGING and encouraging others to ENGAGE.

It is the first step towards our goal of reducing the deaths caused by breast cancer by 50% in the next ten years. On behalf of all those who have battled breast cancer, I encourage you to find your passion to ENGAGE. We are making progress and need your help more than ever to keep the momentum going.

Sincerest gratitude,

Bob Iezzi signature2

SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT

Ford Motor Company, KTP & LAP UAW Local 862, & Paul Miller Ford

pink Spotlight L.jpgfordFord Motor Company has been a national sponsor of the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure for 23 consecutive years and a great partner with their Ford Warriors in Pink program which donates a portion of the proceeds back to local Affiliates. They have dedicated more than $133 million in monetary and in-kind donations to the breast cancer cause.

Ford KTP logoKomen Kentucky also is fortunate to have a relationship with the Louisville Assembly Plant and Kentucky Truck Plant UAW Local 862. The UAW at both locations and Ford Motor Company have been sponsors of the trolley for our medically fragile survivors at the Louisville Race for the Cure since 2013, and were involved in the event many years before that.

Paul Miller FordIn addition, our Lexington office is appreciative of Paul Miller Ford, who will be sponsoring the Survivor Tent at the Lexington Race.  They will be bringing their pink Ford Fusion warrior car to set the pace and their pink photo booth to take pictures in the Survivor Tent.  Be sure to stop by to say hello!

Ford LAP logoThank you, Ford Motor Company, the Louisville Assembly Plant and Kentucky Truck Plant UAW Local 862, and Paul Miller Ford for your tremendous support of Komen!

Abby Hyland

Meet Abby - she will be married in a couple weeks, but back in February of this year, her wedding was not her top priority...  She was too busy learning all there was to know about stage III breast cancer because at the young age of 25, she had just gotten diagnosed with it.

Abby Hyland"I can't even really remember those days because I was so terrified and in shock that I couldn't think of anything," Abby noted. "I remember having to have two of the scariest tests after my mammogram and double mastectomy - a full body scan and a full bone scan to see if the cancer had spread. Fortunately, I caught it when I did and the results were clear."

With that peace of mind, and with chemotherapy and reconstruction surgery behind her, she is now back to focusing on the next step of her life - her upcoming marriage.

Susan G. Komen Kentucky is here in OUR COMMUNITY to help women like Abby - with information, resources, and treatment support. Komen is also busy GLOBALLY with critical breast cancer research. For example, did you know that Komen funding has touched EVERY major breast cancer breakthrough in the past 35 years?

Please help support our mission to "save lives by meeting the most critical needs in our communities and investing in breakthrough research to prevent and cure breast cancer." Women like Abby are counting on us!

*If you are willing to share your Survivor story to provide hope and encouragement to others battling the disease, please contact us. We can help write it, if necessary.
